II Samuel 9:1 (NASB) Then David said, “Is there yet anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” David was the king God had chosen to take over Saul’s place. King Saul was bitter at that thought. He lead wars to kill his son’s (Jonathan’s) best friend David. Eventually King Saul and, son, Jonathan were killed. In hearing the news, the servants ran off to save the grandson of Saul, Mephibosheth (who was crippled). In the traditions of that day, when a new king was coming into rule, which was not related to that last king, the family remaining of that king was killed off. By killing the remaining of the past king, no threat was left for the new king. David wanted to go against tradition and show kindness to anyone who might be left. So he sends out his servants and they find, Mephibosheth. Mephibosheth was brought in front of David and he “fell on his face and prostrated himself.”… David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly.” Again he prostrated himself and said, “What is your servant, that you should regard a dead dog like me?” (v.6a, 7-8)

Today, people adopt children into their families. Thinking along the line of road signs, they also adopt roads to take care of/clean out the litter of. God goes the distance of offering us the kindness of what we once had before we sinned. He sent His Son to die on the cross, to bear our sins and iniquities. We are all ‘dead dogs,’ unworthy of what is offered to us; but, God loves us and offers us to come into His family. It is a great offer, like no other…don’t take it for granted.
