Passing the Torch

Last night I watched the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in awe.
In the past however many months, a flame has traveled out of Athens, around
the world and then, back to Athens. The same flame, passed torch to torch.
The picture of this symbolic tradition of the Olympics is parallel to the Gospel
of Jesus Christ: A flame of God’s infinite, unconditional love and forgiveness,
has been passed on to you and me from the time Jesus, having brought freedom
and redemption to mankind, first sent out the Great Commission, “Then
Jesus came and said to them “All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV). The message, the
light and truth you hold, is not meant to remain bottled up in your life, but
to flow out of you passing to others.
So in this end of summer devotional series, it’s my prayer and challenge
for you to become the torch-bearer Jesus called you to be.
