Seeing God's Glory Face to Face

I was born totally blind. From the moment until I was born on, I haven’t been able to see anything besides light. When I give presentations about blindness, which I often do to different groups of people, I get asked a question similar to this. “How do you feel about being blind?” Some people also ask, “If there was a cure for blindness,” which there is “would you take it?” Some, when they ask this, may be expecting my answer to be “yes, definitely.” That is not the answer that I give them.

When I speak to school and church groups and get asked this question, I respond that I wouldn’t want to get the surgery to give me sight, because (1) I have lived as a person who is blind all of my life, and it would be quite an adjustment for me. Another thing I tell people is that I was made blind for a reason. When I speak to church groups and can be a little bit more open, I tell them that I wouldn’t take the surgery, because I want the first face that I ever see to be Jesus. Think of it, seeing Jesus face to face! The thought just blows me a way when I think about it. I can’t comprehend it.

In Revelation, John is an “eye witness” of God in his glory. I love the scene where the angels are worshipping God and singing “Holy, holy, holy, and worthy is the Lamb!” When I was young and before I knew Christ, I would often think of Heaven as cool at first, but I would say to myself “I am sure it gets boring after a while.” I mean, think of it, we will be there forever. I can’t comprehend that either.

However, now that I am older and know Christ as my savior and Lord, I tend not to think of Heaven as boring anymore, especially when I read Revelation. Although, as when I was younger, I still hope that they serve pizza and maybe have a Starbuck’s or two there! I am excited to see my savior, my Lord, and my master for the first time. Are you excited to see Jesus? Do you want to be like John an “eye witness” of God’s glory? I often wonder, “What was John thinking?” I am guessing he was probably fairly overwhelmed with it all. I will say it again. I am excited for Heaven, to be there, with the angels worshipping, and most of all with Jesus.

What is my prayer then? The words of a very popular contemporary worship song probably sum it up best “Open the eyes of my heart Lord, I want to see you, high and lifted up.” That prayer is not just a prayer for the future; it’s a prayer for now. In our daily lives God, as we go about our day, open our eyes that we might see your glory that we might be able to worship you freely and come to you just as we are with no pretenses, preoccupations, or veils. I want to see you Jesus, because you are worthy.

Prayer: Lord, we are distracted so much in this life because of what we can see, when really the only thing we need to see is you Jesus. Would you open our eyes, remove any veils, and take a way any preoccupations that get in the way of seeing you for who you really are. Take our minds off of Earthly things, and stir in us God, excitement for Heaven where we will not only be able to see your face, but also sit at your feet. Thank you Jesus for being our master, our Savior, and our Lord. In Jesus’s Name Amen.
